The Perfect Duchess (The Macalisters #2)

The Perfect Duchess (The Macalisters, #2)The Perfect Duchess by Erica Taylor
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

This book jumped right in to all the action, without much backstory or any set up, and I felt as though I had missed several chapters. I was confused and had a hard time figuring out what exactly was going on.
The hero hated his birthday ball and all the sycophantic attendees...so why did he have it? He had a crush on the heroine, who he'd apparently known for 5 years...so why did he never seek her out? Come to find out he'd been engaged to her twin...why did he like her better? The heroine was a social outcast because people were spreading completely unfounded gossip about her for no reason...why? Her brother decided she was a whore...because she talked to males? Her brother was upset because she'd spent time with a wealthy titled gentleman at a ball...why was that bad? Then the brother all of a sudden decided he wanted to kill her and started beating her, completely out of the blue...why?
Three chapters into the book, I had no idea what was going on, because all of the situations and conflict that the hero and heroine were facing had no real set-up. It did not at all feel organic, and it seemed like the issues they were facing were completely unfounded. I would not recommend this book at all.
